BIEK Global Arts Week 2026

Britain, Korea and the Universal Language of Music

For many years discussions surrounding British education in South Korea have centred almost exclusively upon schools, universities, qualifications and admissions. These are undoubtedly important, but they represent only one aspect of educational collaboration.

The strongest international educational relationships are built not simply through institutions, but through people. They develop when respected academics, performers, teachers and young people work together, exchange ideas and discover one another's cultures through shared intellectual and artistic endeavour.

It is precisely this philosophy that lies behind BIEK Global Arts Week 2026, which will take place in Seoul from 27 July to 1 August 2026.

Organised by BIEK LLP in partnership with the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM), the week represents an important milestone in strengthening educational and cultural ties between the United Kingdom and the Republic of Korea.

Bringing British Excellence to Korea

Few institutions embody Britain's international reputation for musical excellence more strongly than the Royal Northern College of Music.

For generations the RNCM has educated musicians who have gone on to perform on the world's leading stages, while its professors continue to shape the next generation of international performers.

This summer two distinguished members of the RNCM faculty, Professor Graham Scott and Professor Simon Callaghan, will travel to Seoul to lead an intensive week of musical education, performance and talent development.

Their presence reflects not only the RNCM's commitment to international engagement but also its confidence in the growing educational partnership being developed with BIEK.

A Week Designed Around Educational Excellence

Rather than focusing upon a single concert or competition, BIEK Global Arts Week has been designed as a complete educational programme.

Throughout the week students will participate in:

  • The RNCM Seoul International Piano Competition

  • Individual RNCM Masterclasses

  • A public Faculty Concert

  • An Award Winners' Gala Concert

  • RNCM admissions auditions for selected participants

Together these activities provide young Korean musicians with opportunities that previously would have required travel to the United Kingdom.

Instead, world-class British musical expertise is being brought directly to Seoul.

Education Rather Than Entertainment

Competitions alone do not create musicians.

What distinguishes this initiative is that every component has been designed around learning.

Students will receive detailed feedback from internationally respected professors, participate in intensive masterclasses, observe professional performances and gain first-hand exposure to British conservatoire standards.

In addition to prize certificates, participants may receive official jury recommendations recognising exceptional musical promise, providing valuable encouragement for future study.

Most importantly, every participant leaves with experience rather than simply a result.

Cultural Exchange at Its Best

The Faculty Concert, entitled From Shadow to Celebration, perfectly illustrates the spirit of the week.

Bringing together British and Korean artists, the programme features works by Poulenc, Schubert, Debussy, Beethoven, Schumann and Milhaud.

Music possesses a remarkable ability to transcend language.

British and Korean musicians may come from different educational systems, but they speak fluently through performance.

Events such as these remind us that international education is not solely about qualifications; it is equally about cultural understanding, mutual respect and enduring friendship.

Supporting the Next Generation

One of BIEK's central objectives has always been to create meaningful opportunities for young people.

Through BIEK Global Arts Week, talented pianists ranging from primary-aged pupils through to university students will perform before an international jury composed of distinguished Korean professors alongside RNCM faculty.

The event therefore offers an authentic international platform at an early stage in students' musical development.

For many participants this may become their first experience of engaging directly with British higher education.

Building Long-Term Educational Partnerships

Although this year's programme focuses upon music, its significance extends well beyond the arts.

Successful educational partnerships are built upon trust, professionalism and the ability to deliver meaningful programmes internationally.

BIEK Global Arts Week demonstrates the practical capability required to organise major collaborative educational events involving leading British institutions.

It also reflects BIEK's broader commitment to developing long-term educational partnerships between the United Kingdom and South Korea across schools, universities, music conservatoires and other educational organisations.

We believe that sustainable educational relationships are established not through isolated meetings but through successful projects that bring genuine value to students, educators and institutions alike.

Looking Forward

Britain's educational reputation has never rested solely upon examination results.

It rests equally upon scholarship, creativity, culture and the willingness to share expertise internationally.

BIEK Global Arts Week 2026 seeks to embody those values.

We are delighted to welcome the Royal Northern College of Music to Seoul and look forward to an inspiring week of learning, performance and cultural exchange.

We hope this marks only the beginning of many years of collaboration between British and Korean educational institutions, creating opportunities that benefit students in both countries while strengthening one of the world's most dynamic international educational partnerships.
