Shinhan University (President Kang Sung-jong) hosted a welcome event on February 21, 2025, at its main campus for representatives from Haileybury, one of the United Kingdom’s prestigious schools, and BIEK. The parties held discussions on establishing an international college and building a global education network.
Attendees included Shinhan University President Kang Sung-jong and senior deans, as well as Haileybury’s Chairman Martin Rayfield, Principal Eugene du Toit, Director Mark Smith, and BIEK’s Directors Ian Hunt, Henry Aronsson, Sebastian Pozzo, Byeongdo Choi (BIEK Korea Representative), and Benjamin Lee, among others — a total of 12 participants. The meeting confirmed both institutions’ strong commitment to cooperation.
President Kang stated,
“Shinhan University is expanding its international education and exchanges in line with the global era. Particularly, we are actively promoting the establishment of international schools so that the northern Gyeonggi region can grow into an innovative hub where international education and future industries converge, rather than being seen merely as an outskirt of the metropolitan area.”
He continued,
“The Namyangju and Paju sites owned by our university offer ideal conditions for international school development. Paju, while close to the capital area, provides a nature-friendly educational environment. Here, we plan to build a leading global education hub representing Korea and pursue practical cooperation to nurture international talent.”
He added confidently,
“Shinhan University will not only establish international schools but will also grow alongside the northern Gyeonggi region to become a university leading both global education and regional development.”
Haileybury Chairman Martin Rayfield said,
“We are deeply grateful for President Kang’s warm hospitality. We will strive to achieve positive outcomes through continued collaboration with Shinhan University, which possesses strong global education capabilities.”
BIEK Director Ian Hunt commented,
“I was deeply impressed by the Taekwondo Department’s demonstration and could see Shinhan University’s educational philosophy reflected in its students.”
Founded in 1806, Haileybury is a renowned British school. This visit is expected to further strengthen ties between Haileybury and Shinhan University and lead to ongoing, practical discussions regarding the establishment of an international school and the expansion of a global education network.
