Shinhan University (President Kang Sung-jong) held a welcome event on February 21, 2025, at its main campus for representatives of Haileybury, one of the United Kingdom’s prestigious schools, and BIEK. The parties also held discussions on the establishment of an international college and the creation of a global education network.
The event was attended by Shinhan University President Kang Sung-jong, senior university administrators, and deans. The Haileybury delegation included Chairman Martin Rayfield, Principal Eugene du Toit, and Director Mark Smith. From BIEK, Directors Ian Hunt, Henry Aronson, Sebastian Pozzo, Korea Representative Byeongdo Choi, and Benjamin Lee were present—twelve participants in total—affirming both sides’ shared commitment to collaboration.
President Kang said,
“Shinhan University is expanding international education and exchange in step with the era of globalisation. In particular, we are actively pursuing the establishment of international schools so that the northern Gyeonggi region can grow into an innovative hub where global education and future industries converge, rather than being regarded as merely the outskirts of the capital area.”
He continued,
“Our university’s Namyangju and Paju campuses offer ideal conditions for founding international schools. Paju, while adjacent to the capital region, provides a nature-friendly educational environment. Here, we plan to build a global education hub representing South Korea and continue practical cooperation to nurture international talent.”
He added with confidence,
“Shinhan University will not only establish international schools but also grow alongside the northern Gyeonggi region to become a university that leads both global education and local development.”
Haileybury Chairman Martin Rayfield stated,
“I am deeply grateful for President Kang’s warm hospitality, and we will strive to achieve positive results through continued collaboration with Shinhan University, which has strong global educational capabilities.”
BIEK Director Ian Hunt said,
“I was deeply impressed by the Taekwondo Department’s demonstration, and through the students, I could clearly see Shinhan University’s educational philosophy.”
Founded in 1806, Haileybury is one of Britain’s leading schools. This visit is expected to further strengthen the cooperative relationship between Shinhan University and Haileybury, with ongoing discussions anticipated for the establishment of an international school and the expansion of a global education network.
